URBAN EXPANSION AND (DIS)ORGANIZATION IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF MARABAIXO, MACAPÁ/AMAPÁ.

The complexity of the urban environment demands in-depth analysis, considering its evolution and spatial interactions. To fully understand this scenario, it is necessary to investigate its historical process and its influences. This study addresses the territorial formation of Macapá and its urban dynamics, exploring the impact on the growth of the Marabaixo neighborhoods. To this end, the urbanization process in the Amazon was investigated, considering the historical trajectory of occupations in Macapá and government action. The analysis is based on three conceptual levels, established by Becker (1990), correlated to the spatial organization patterns proposed by Gonçalves (2001). The role of highways in the region and the influence of economic activities, such as mining and agriculture, on territorial planning are highlighted. The study identifies three distinct economic periods in the history of Amapá, each influencing the migratory movement and urbanization in Macapá. Observing the implementation of urban subdivision policies by the state government, directing the expansion of the city in the western zone and culminating in the formation of the Marabaixo neighborhoods, where it is possible to observe a dichotomy in the characteristics of housing and the quality of public services, reflecting urban planning policies and distribution of resources over the years. This research seeks to understand these disparities and their influence on the urban dynamics of the region, as well as to analyze the process of urban growth in Macapá and its impact on the creation of the Marabaixo neighborhoods, offering knowledge for urban development in Amazonian contexts.
