SUMMARY:

Hepatitis C is a viral infection caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV) and represents one of the
greatest public health challenges globally. Transmission occurs through various routes, such as
unprotected sexual intercourse, needle sharing, occupational exposure among healthcare
professionals, and blood transfusions before the rigorous implementation of serological
screening. Due to the absence of clear symptoms in its early stage, the virus is often identified
through screening conducted at blood centers during blood donations. Objective: To analyze
the epidemiological profile of blood donors with serological results positive for the hepatitis C
virus treated at the Institute of Hematology and Hemotherapy of Amapá (HEMOAP). Methods:
This is a cross-sectional, analytical-retrospective study conducted through the collection of
secondary data from an institutional computerized database. Data were extracted from
consolidated reports containing grouped information from laboratory screening results of blood
donors from January 2019 to December 2023.Results: Of the 70,606 potential donors, 1,972
(2.79%) were deemed ineligible for donation after laboratory screening due to reactive
serological markers. Among these, 75 tested positive for hepatitis C, were excluded, and their
blood units were discarded. The ineligibility rate due to HCV was 0.11%. Among individuals
positive for hepatitis C, a higher incidence was observed in males, with 39 cases (52.0%); 46
(61.33%) were single, 31 (41.33%) had completed higher education, and the majority of donors
(81.33%) resided in the city of Macapá. A downward trend in the ineligibility rate due to HCV
among blood donors was observed over the years. Conclusion: Male, young, and single donors
showed a higher serological ineligibility rate, which may be justified by risky sexual behavior.
Understanding the serological profile of blood donation candidates serves as a tool for
improving the quality management system of the blood center, clinical and laboratory
screening, and early disease detection.
