SUMMARY:

Mayaro virus fever is considered an endemic zoonotic disease in humid tropical forests
in the Amazon region. Outbreaks of the disease have occurred frequently over the years.
Given the magnitude of the disease as an important public health problem and its high
prevalence in the Amazon, it is necessary to understand its characteristics. In this sense,
the objective of this study is to outline the epidemiological and clinical profile of reported
cases of Mayaro virus in the State of Pará. For this purpose, data from the Notifiable
Diseases Information System, which are available for download on the DATASUS
website, were used. The data were downloaded in CSV format and organized in Excel.
These data were subsequently entered into the SPSS Software (21.0) for the appropriate
statistical analyses. Descriptive analysis was performed using absolute numbers (N) and
percentages (%) for categorical variables. The presentation will be made using
distribution and frequency tables, as well as graphs. The analysis of the significance of
possible associations between epidemiological characteristics and risk variables was
performed using the Chi-Square Test. A significance level of 5% was adopted for the tests
performed. Among the results, regarding the epidemiological profile of the participants,
there was a predominance of women, of economically active age, brown skin, living in
urban areas and work activities related to domestic work or home care, showing the
variations in the epidemiological profile of those reported with Mayaro Fever. Among
the most frequent symptoms are: fever, headache, myalgia and retro-orbital pain. Whose
co-infection with dengue is 60.61% of the total cases. It was also verified that there is no
statistically significant association (p-value > 0.05) between gender and place of
residence with history of disease, however, male patients are those who have the highest
(9.09%) history of previous disease, and it can also be verified that only patients who
reside in urban areas have this history. On the other hand, there is a statistically significant

association (p-value = 0.007; p-value = 0.053) between gender and age group with co-
infection with Dengue, women are those who have the highest prevalence (30.30%) of

co-infection, and it can also be seen that the age group from 20 to 39 years old, presented
a higher (21.21%) possibility of co-infection, in relation to men (9.09%). However, place
of residence is not related to coinfection (p-value = 0.530). Therefore, it is concluded that
Mayaro Fever is a new arbovirus that has been occurring in urban environments and,
therefore, a potential threat to public health. Due to the lack of investment in arbovirus
research, epidemiological, virological and vector control measures are lacking, especially
when there is a threat to public health.
