Introduction: Visual acuity is an important factor that can indicate the predisposition to falls
among the elderly, directly influencing their mobility and autonomy. This condition is
particularly relevant in the current context, as by 2025, Brazil is expected to be the 6th country
with the largest elderly population. The decrease in visual acuity compromises the ability to
detect obstacles and maintain balance, affecting the autonomy and mobility of older adults.
Objective: To assess the relationship between visual acuity and falls in the elderly in the
municipality of Santana, Amapá. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive, cross-
sectional, and quantitative study involving the participation of 57 elderly individuals from the
Vida Feliz group. Visual acuity was measured using the Snellen Chart, and the NEI VFQ-25
questionnaire was applied to assess vision-related quality of life. The significance level adopted
for the analyses was p < 0.05. The data collected were analyzed using Jamovi software through
the Spearman test. Results: There was a statistically significant association between vision-
related quality of life and falls, as indicated by the Spearman test applied to the NEI VFQ-25
questionnaire data with a p-value of 0.007. A statistically significant association was also
observed between measures taken before and after applying the Pinhole instrument in the right
eye, as evidenced by the analysis conducted using the Spearman test with a p-value of 0.080.
Conclusion: The findings highlighted a statistically significant association between vision-
related quality of life and falls. A significant correlation was also found, indicating progress in
the identification line of the Snellen Chart optotypes, demonstrating an important improvement
in visual acuity with the application of the Pinhole instrument in the right eye within the study
population.
