Perspective on Local Development of the Cajari Reserve, Amapá, Brazil: The Dynamics of Women's Agroextractivist Work
Chaves: Desenvolvimento, agroextrativismo, feminino
This research consisted of an analysis of women's labor in family production within the Cajari River Extractive Reserve, located in the municipality of Laranjal do Jari, in the state of Amapá, Brazil. The objective was to examine female participation in family production as a driver of rural community development in southern Amapá. A qualitative approach was conducted through interviews with agroextractivist women from the Cajari Extractive Reserve (RESEX Cajari) in the communities of Água Branca, Martins, and Santarém.
The results showed that women participate throughout the entire Brazil nut production chain, in family farming, and in social organizations such as associations and cooperatives. Furthermore, in addition to all their labor and political responsibilities, women remain responsible for domestic work, which unfortunately continues to be undervalued despite their crucial role in ensuring the survival of agroextractivist families in the Cajari Reserve.
We conclude that peasant labor in RESEX Cajari communities stems from the empowerment of agroextractivist women in the region, which has been consolidated through collective organizations. However, this process also represents a significant form of exploitation due to the excessive workload imposed on women in rural, political, and family spheres.
