SUMMARY:

The present research project aims to investigate socioeconomic and environmental innovations in the Cajarí River Extractive Reserve (RESEX-CA), with an emphasis on agroextractivism from its creation in 1990 until 2024. The adopted methodological approach will be both qualitative and quantitative, using a case study of the Água Branca do Rio Cajari Community as the research strategy, as outlined by Yin (2016). This will allow for an in-depth analysis of the phenomenon in its real context and enable an understanding of the transformations that have occurred in the research area. The main objectives include: (1) mapping and analyzing the innovations introduced in the Brazil nut agroextractivism, (2) evaluating the impact of these innovations on production and income diversification in local communities, and (3) discussing the socioeconomic and cultural challenges that emerge from this process, such as the exclusion of traditional groups and cultural disfigurement. Regarding data collection, it will be conducted through interviews and direct observations, aiming to understand the dynamics between traditional practices and innovations. The central hypothesis of this study posits that external factors, such as access to the internet, availability of electricity, and improvements in transportation infrastructure, have induced innovations that promote the growth of the agroextractivist sector and diversify the sources of income for local communities. The research will be based on multiple sources of evidence, including interviews, direct observations, and documentary data, such as articles, theses, and dissertations, to ensure data triangulation and, consequently, increase the validity of the conclusions. Thus, this study seeks to contribute to the understanding of innovation dynamics in the RESEX-CA and its implications for the sustainable development of the region, promoting a broader understanding of how conservation policies and sustainable development can be effectively implemented, aligning the interests of local communities with the needs for environmental preservation.
