Challenges and Opportunities for the Expansion of Agroindustry in the State of Amapá
Bioeconomy – Production Chains – Infrastructure – Markets
The expansion of the debate on bioeconomy in the Amazon, among various issues, brings to light the importance of a segment of the production chain of Amazonian biodiversity products: agroindustry. This is because the goal of adding value to these products requires vertical integration of activities within the region itself, as a way to provide job creation, income, and wealth to local inhabitants, a possible condition for preventing deforestation and maintaining the integrity of the forest. This research aims to analyze the challenges and opportunities for the expansion of agroindustry in the State of Amapá, through a bibliographic and documentary review, followed by a field survey based on a sample approach. The production chains of açaí, Brazil nuts, cupuaçu, cacao, and cassava were chosen because they are considered the most traditional, most representative, or with great expansion potential. Regarding the challenges, some of the significant infrastructure deficiencies characteristic of the State can be listed, especially transportation logistics, energy, connectivity, investment capital, and improvements in business management. Among the opportunities, the availability of raw materials, represented by the stock of natural resources in the region, and the workforce, as well as the expanding market for Amazonian products, stand out.
